The Fasting Cholesterol Check
A 12-14 hour
period of water only is best prior to a fasting cholesterol check..
While triglycerides do show significant changes based on what was eaten just
prior to testing, and are more accurate when measured in the fasting state, or with a "fasting cholesterol check", cholesterol levels are not
extremely sensitive to the foods you have just eaten. A non-fasting cholesterol check may be adequate for screening purposes, but for
patients on certain types of cholesterol therapy a fasting cholesterol check sample may be required for the most accurate measurements as well as
for someone with borderline or high cholesterol levels.
Even though non-fasting cholesterol check levels may still give
reasonable information, triglyceride levels should be determined with a fasting cholesterol check (water only) for 8-12 hours to be most
accurate. Furthermore, patients with high triglycerides need to be particularly careful about their diets.
We generally don’t worry about triglyceride levels that are too high as much
as we do about cholesterol. Patients who suffer from arteriosclerosis, with high triglycerides also need to modify their dieting behavior. It is
important for other causes of high triglycerides to be researched. It may, or may not be due to diet or the patient’s genes, it may possibly be
associated with other health conditions.
The treatment for high cholesterol and triglycerides are similar. Either can
lead to serious health issues. The best plan for your future is prevention... watch what you eat. Stay away from, or at least over
indulgence in high saturated fat and high trans-fatty foods. Instead, use mono and polyunsaturated fats in cooking and in pre-prepared
dishes.
