I Lost 30 pounds...And I Keep It Off!

For several years I had been dissatisfied with what I saw in the mirror. I didn't particularly look at myself that often but when I was just chillin', as the kids would say, between clients, and would catch a glimps of myself in the mirror I did not like the looks of that pounch hanging over my belt. When I saw photos taken at my daughter's graduation open house I kind of blamed what I saw on the poor fit of the cloths I wore. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I was what you would call "obese", in fact 30 pounds isn't that much to loose. But saying, "I lost 30 pounds" (actually it's 28 pounds at the moment and still counting) doesn't have the same astonishing effect that saying someone lost 100 pounds does.

When our family doctor suggested that I loose about five pounds it was just the thing I needed to hear to get me motivated into action. I had been displeased for quite some time about my appearance, but not enough to do anyhting about, it until then. I wasn't what I would call obese, though some might say that, it was just displeasing to me.

Like anything else a person is faced with, whether it's loosing weight, quiting the smoking habit or any other habit... you'll do something about it when you want to. Not until then. It doesn't matter how much someone else wants you to and it doesn't matter how much you "think" about it. You've simply got to want to! After that visit to the doctor's office and being put on a "mild" blood pressure medication... I wanted to loose weight, and I want to keep it off!

Here's the first thing I did that very day: I quit the 8:00p.m. feeding that I had enduldged myself with for I don't know how many years. I came by it honestly. For years my work schedule has encouraged such behavior. I've been a Cosmetologist/Hair Stylist/Barber, depends who your asking, for nearly 30 years.

In my quest to loose weight, I've tried everything. Like I said, I first started by NOT eating after 6:00 p.m. and started walking a mile or two a day. That worked for a little while, and then I hit a plateau. So I then started riding a stationary bike for a ½-hour then an hour and started loosing a little more, then another plateau. Then I reduced my calorie intake and lost more…another plateau. Then on to swimming 2000 to 3000 then to 4000 yards three times, a week...lost more. I am currently swimming and walking or riding bike to work (both jobs).

I’ve tried Adkins in the past and even tried it this time. Every time I go off Adkins within days it all comes back, and I cannot stick to Adkins. I’ve currently cut out bread, anything white (except some sugar in coffee) and almost all SAT and Trans-Fats and you know what, I don’t crave anything in particular. I just eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m satisfied. I do snack on peanuts mostly and some low-carb items. I also think sometimes that I want something with more flavor but it just doesn’t have the appeal, unless it’s spicy, spicy like guacamole or Cajun… yum-yum!

I started out at 5'9" and 183lbs. Of course I'm still 5'9" but I've lost 28 pounds and about 3-4 inches...
